The Anchor Alarm feature constantly checks your current GPS location against the spot where you dropped anchor. If you drift too far from that spot, it will sound an alarm and show a warning on the screen.
Anchor Alarm settings
On the main settings page, you will see the feature ‘Anchor Alarm’ go into its page to set it up:
Set the anchor position
It is crucial to accurately set the anchor position correctly to use the Anchor Alarm feature. The alarm relies on this information to calculate if your boat is drifting away from its radius. The anchor position refers to the spot where the anchor rests on the seafloor.
Everytime you set up anchoring mode, you will be prompted to choose one of the following anchor positions:
- Start receiving AnchorLink: This option is available only if you have enabled AnchorLink Mirroring on another device (logged with the same GEC Account). It initiates your remote Anchor Alarm mode. Check out the AnchorLink page for more details.
- Current anchor position: This starts the anchor alarm using the anchor position currently set.
- Live anchoring capture: This allows you to define a new anchor position while you are anchoring. It provides additional helpful information for the anchoring process. Refer to "The Anchoring Process BEFORE Setting the Anchor Alarm" article for details.
- After drop capture: If you have already released your anchor and want to record its position, you have two options:
Option A: If you are directly above the seafloor anchor position, select "A," capture the GPS position, and then end the procedure.
Option B: If not directly above, select "B," record your GPS position, enter the distance to the anchor position, and then end the procedure.
You can restart the anchor position process by tapping the "Set with GPS" button near the "Anchor position" label. You can also manually enter the anchor position coordinates by tapping on the coordinates below the "Anchor position" label.
Additionally, you can select the anchor position on the map after enabling the Anchor alarm. Tap on the Anchor alarm circle to display a pop-up menu with the option to move the anchor position manually.
Integrating with the boat's built-in instruments through a WiFi connection can significantly improve the Anchor alarm's quality and stability. Using the boat's GPS instead of the phone's GPS reduces false alarms when moving around the boat. Plus, it allows you to see depth and wind on your phone from your stateroom bed when leaving the anchor alarm running overnight (remember to turn on airplane mode to save power!).
Set the alarm parameters
When your GPS position moves away from the recorded anchor placement and away from the alarm radius the app will trigger an alarm. Here are some of the parameters available for you to customize:
The parameters available are:
- Alarm radius: This is how far you can drift from the anchor point before the alarm goes off. You choose the unit (feet or meters) in the app settings.
- Warning area: This gives you an early heads-up when you're getting close to the alarm radius. The app changes color from green to yellow to let you know.
- Alarm delay (seconds): After you drift outside the alarm zone, this is how long the app waits before sounding the alarm. If you get back inside in time, the alarm won't go off.
The Anchorage tracking feature helps you monitor your boat's movements during anchoring. It's like keeping an eye on your boat's progress to make sure it's staying put.
NOTE: the track recorded by this function has a completely different color and shape compared to the standard Track recording. It is a light gray and very thin line in order to not clutter the screen. In case you need to see the standard track color and shape you can enable the standard track recording.
You can choose which alarm you would like to use:
- Distance alarm: This one warns you when you're drifting too far from the anchor point.
- Low battery alarm: If your device's battery is running low, this alarm reminds you to plug it in.
Note: It's a good idea to charge your phone at night to avoid running out of battery. - GPS quality alarm: This alarm tells you when your device isn't getting a strong enough GPS signal.
Note: It only goes off if your GPS signal stays weak for more than 5 minutes.
AnchorLink™ settings
The AnchorLink enables you to monitor your boat's status during anchorage, even when you are not on board. It sends all anchor alarm information to another device, allowing you to bring it with you while off-board.
See the dedicated AnchorLink page for details.
Anchor alarm info on map
To display the current status of the Anchor alarm, the app places a colored circle on the map, centered around the Anchor position. Here's what the colors mean:
- Green: Your GPS is inside the Warning Area circle.
- Yellow: Your GPS is between the Warning Area and the Alarm radius.
- Red: Your GPS is outside the Alarm radius.
- Gray: There's not enough GPS info available.
You will also see a yellow line indicating where the Warning circle starts.
When the Anchor Alarm is active, a new window pops up on the screen:
